After visiting Israel and the Palestinian Authority, US' Presidential candidate Mitt Romney reflects on how culture creates prosperity and success.
But how does culture creates prosperity? Many significant features come to mind: work ethic, appreciation for education, willingness to take risks, commitment to honor and oath, family orientation, devotion to a purpose greater than ourselves, patriotism.
As Mr. Romney rightly notes - these features are part of what made the US the greatest economic power in the history of the earth. And it wouldn't be possible to create the US without the most basic feature of all - freedom.
The US shares these foundations with Israel - both countries were created by mixing together cultures of people from all over the world and both value freedom and understand its crucial importance.
Or in Mr. Romney's words:
"Israel is also a telling example. Like the United States, the state of Israel has a culture that is based upon individual freedom and the rule of law. It is a democracy that has embraced liberty, both political and economic. This embrace has created conditions that have enabled innovators and entrepreneurs to make the desert bloom. In the face of improbable odds, Israel today is a world leader in fields ranging from medicine to information technology."
The Middle East has undergone tremendous changes over the last 18 months. These changes through revolution only amplifies the complexity of a truly democratic and free society.
As you read these words people all over the world are fighting for their freedom. In Syria the battles never stop and even the UN gave up on trying to establish peace. In Iran, a fanatic regime drags its people down with its mad insistence on building nuclear weapons. In Egypt, Tunisia and Libya, people are trying to establish a free society but are bounded by the confining walls of Islam.
So yes - freedom is precious and countries like Israel and the US which are founded on true freedom should stick together.
